The Baby Friendly Initiative is a global program of UNICEF and the World Health Organization which works with the health services to improve practice so that parents are enabled and supported to make informed choices about how they feed and care for their babies.
The IWK Health Centre is pursuing the BFI as the minimal standard of care. The BFI’s evidence-based information is helping to shape quality improvement initiatives in all care areas. The IWK Health Centre has a letter of participation representing the commitment to become designated as a BFI hospital.
Health care facilities which adopt practices to support successful breastfeeding (and meet several other related criteria) receive the prestigious UNICEF/WHO Baby Friendly designation.
Approximately 375 breast surgeries will be performed annually at the IWK, with approximately 3,000 visits to the Breast Health Clinic.
