The Future Health Research & Innovation Scholarship

About the Scholarship

The Future Health Research and Innovation Scholarships were created in 2015 to foster awareness of health research among youth. 

These annual scholarships are open to grade 12 students who plan on continuing their education at a Maritime post-secondary institution in a field that will enhance health research or innovation.  Applicants are required to write an essay demonstrating their interest in health-related research and innovation and how it will improve the health and well-being of children, women and families in the Maritimes.

How to Apply

IWK Research Services is pleased to offer the Future Health Research and Innovation Scholarship.

To be considered for one of three Future Health Research and Innovation Scholarships valued at $2500, grade 12 students in the Maritimes must intend on continuing their education at a Maritime post-secondary institution (college or university) in a field that will enhance research and/or innovation in health care.

Awards will be issued as follows:

  • One in Nova Scotia
  • One in New Brunswick
  • One in Prince Edward Island 

Students submitting an application must include an Application Form, cover letter, essay, letters of recommendation, and transcripts. The cover letter should explain why they are interested in a particular area of health research and/or innovation and how their post-secondary education will help them pursue their research goals. The essay must be written using scientific evidence to explain the specific area of health research and/or innovation they would like to pursue and how their research and/or innovation could potentially contribute to the health and well-being of children, women and families in the Maritimes. The student must provide one Academic Reference (e.g.  A teacher who can speak to their marks and school performance) and one Character Reference (e.g. A coach or boss who can speak to sportsmanship or work ethic). Lastly the student must provide their Grades 11 and 12 (in progress) transcripts, and have a minimum average of 75%.

Past Recipients

Research Services at IWK Health recognized three outstanding grade 12 students within the Maritimes who have demonstrated an early interest in health related research and innovation. Applications were received from the three Maritime Provinces and one scholarship worth $2500 was awarded in each of those provinces. The recipients were:

Nova Scotia - Morgan Leblanc from Prince Albert High School in Dartmouth, NS will be enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Program at Mount Allison University. Morgan will also be playing varsity Volleyball.

New Brunswick - Lucas Fearn from Rothesay High School in Rothesay, NB will be attending Acadia Unversity to pursue a Bachelor of Kinesiology.

Prince Edward Island - Rachel Green from Kinkora Regional High School in Kinkora, PE will be attending the University of Prince Edward Island to complete her Bachelor of Science, majoring in Kinesiology.

New Brunswick – Lauren Whiteway of the Rothesay Netherwood School, Rothesay, will be enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Psychology at Mount Allison University.

Prince Edward Island Chris Zhou, of Colonel Gray High School, Charlottetown, will be enrolled in the Bachelors of Medical Sciences at Dalhousie University.
