We understand the news of infant formula shortages in the United States is causing stress for many families in Canada and want to reassure our community that IWK Health has a good supply of infant formula, including specialty formula. There are limited amounts of extensively hydrolyzed (broken down proteins) infant formula at the retail level which are being closely monitored.
Panic buying and stock piling should be avoided to ensure those with diagnosed allergies are able to obtain enough formula as our vendors and Health Canada work to increase production and source new products under the interim policy. To assist with the supply, Health Canada has approved an extensively hydrolyzed liquid concentrate and ready to use product that will soon be available in the Canadian market. There are many reasons for the use of an extensively hydrolyzed formula, most commonly it is recommended for infants diagnosed with allergies.
What substitute formula would be recommended will depend on the age of the infant, how long the infant has been on the product, symptoms of the infant and diagnosis. For fussy or gassy babies there are options that may be easier to digest and can be discussed, such as a partially hydrolyzed formula (smaller size proteins). It is sometimes complex and a discussion with your primary health care provider may be needed, especially if you suspect food allergies.
To help prevent food allergies the Eat Early Eat Often guidelines should be followed when your baby is ready to start solid foods, around six months of age. For more information on introduction of solids see Nova Scotia’s Loving Care Resources.
