  • Overview of Mental Health and Addiction Services

Mental Health and Addictions Program (MHA) is one of three clinical programs at the IWK Health Centre. We treat children and youth up until their 19th birthday within a patient and family centered context. Families are essential partners in the treatment of the childhood onset of mental health and addictions issues, and we strive to include families in treatment and to partner with families to support health and wellness for their children. For youth between 18 and 19 years of age who continue to require services, we begin a transition plan to adult programs/services which includes enhancing skills for self-care and self-advocacy.

The MHA Program provides services in schools, community clinics, day and residential settings, as well as inpatient setting for the most acutely ill children and youth. We offer more indirect services through consultation with family practice physicians as well as training with community partners to enhance skills to provide care in the community. We provide services that are evidence-based, in other words, services that research has shown to work. Through our Choice and Partnership Approach (CAPA), a variety of options for treatment are available to match the needs and goals of the families seeking help. Referrals for service come from family physicians, other mental health and addictions care providers, schools, and community agencies, as well as self-referrals from youth and families.

We offer intake and navigation services for people who call through to our  IWK Central Intake service:  Toll free 1.855.922.1122

In addition to the clinical services we deliver, the MHA Program is monitoring clinical outcomes in order to improve service delivery and contribute to research. We are tracking and monitoring information on patient satisfaction, staff satisfaction, and cost effectiveness. Teaching the next generation of care providers in the fields of Psychiatry, Psychology, Clinical Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Child and Youth Studies, Recreation Therapy and Education is also an essential part of our work as we plan for future generations.
