IWK COVID-19 Testing Centre

  • Call 811 or use the online self assessment service to find out if you need a COVID-19 test  
  • Testing is by appointment only
  • Please book the soonest available appointment that you are able to attend
  • If you are booking for a child (4 to 18), allow at least an hour without food, drink or gum in case your child has gargle testing


  • Wear a non-medical mask (children over 2 years old, as able) to the appointment
  • Bring your health card and your appointment confirmation number
  • Do not use public transit, instead use a personal vehicle, taxi or walk; if you require transportation assistance, please contact Public Health at 1-844-996-0694
  • Arrive no more than 5 minutes before your test and go directly to the assessment centre
  • After your test immediately leave the building and return home
  • Do not visit other areas of the hospital including Tim Hortons and Subway



  • The IWK assessment centre offers two types of COVID-19 tests:
  • Younger children should practice the gargle steps at home
  • The test takes about 15 minutes
  • A new surgical mask will be provided for anyone being tested
  • Results are provided by Public Health within 72 hours


Support Person

  • Children & youth: 1 parent/caregiver may attend; siblings are not permitted
  • Adults: come alone, no support persons allowed



  • IWK Health Centre: 5850/5980 University Avenue, Halifax
  • The assessment centre is located in the Richard B. Goldbloom Pavilion 
  • Entering from outside: there are two entrances to the pavilion (see map below)
  • Entering from the parkade: there are two entrances on level 2 of the parkade (see map below)
  • Once inside, look for the assessment centre signs near Subway





Special Needs 

  • Some children and youth may need extra supports because they have challenges or delays in their physical, intellectual, emotional, social, language or behavioral development. It may be helpful for our staff to be able to discuss this with you before you come for your testing appointment. If you would like to speak with a staff member please call 902-470-8759 and leave a detailed message with clear directions on how to contact you, your child’s name and date and time of their appointment.
